On Wednesday, May 28, 2008 RIAGE sponsored a “Meeting of the Minds” professional development workshop led by Susan Griggs and Jean Dawson at the West Bay Collaborative in Warwick, RI.

The workshop provided useful information for both enrichment and classroom teachers for challenging the advanced learner. Susan and Jean took a look at differentiated strategies that many teachers are familiar with such as Cubing, Hopscotch, RAFTs and Four Square writing techniques. Then they ratcheted up those strategies and revised them to accommodate the needs of advanced learners. They also shared the latest practical strategies for differientating the curriculum for the students learning beyond grade level. Participants left the workshop with activities that they could implement in their classrooms the next day.

Different Minds: Gifted Children with AD/HD, Asperger Syndrome, and Other Learning Deficits

This book focuses on the strengths and problems of gifted children with AD/HD, Asperger Syndrome and/or Nonverbal Learning Disability. In addition to a general description of AD/HD, and Asperger Syndrome, the book also highlights cognitive, creative, emotional, social and moral issues of these unique gifted children. There are also sections on assessment of gifted children and a list of resources.
