RIAGE is pleased to present
Dr. Deirdre Lovecky, Ph.D.
Director of the Gifted Resource Center of New England as our Special Guest Speaker on

April 30, 2002.

Dr. Lovecky's talk
"The Twice Exceptional Gifted Child"
will be about gifted children
who have learning disabilities,
ADHD, Asperger's Syndrome, or other
behavioral or mental health disorders.

(Admission is free, and refreshments will follow.)

An excerpt from the article:

"There are a number of reasons for considering gifted children with AD/HD. The dual exceptionality of being both gifted, and AD/HD, often means that such children are not recognized as having either exceptionality, and thus, their needs for an appropriate education are not met. AD/HD, in this paper, refers to the mixed type, those children with symptoms of both inattention, and hyperactivity. AD/HD is considered to be a deficit in ability to inhibit responding with consequent deficits in self regulation and self monitoring of behavior. The underlying deficit in AD/HD is hypothesized to be biological, and based on differences in neurotransmitter regulation of dopamine. Most affected are the areas of the brain that deal with the executive functions, that is the ability to regulate, modulate, produce on demand, organize, and sustain focus. " (Lovecky, 1999). The Gifted Resource Center of New England, located in Providence, RI, serves the needs of gifted children, adolescents and their families. Clinical psychological and educational services are offered in assessment, psychotherapy, curriculum design, school consultation and teacher in-service. Also, articles, resource lists, and suggested readings are offered.

"I have been a clinical psychologist for more than 20 years, and specialize currently in working with gifted children. My interests are in helping to identify gifted children and to design meaningful school programs and outside enrichment activities for them to pursue. I am especially interested in these children's needs for increased complex stimulation and abstraction. Also, the highly and exceptionally gifted are of particular interest as I have assessed more than 70 children over IQ 160. I am interested in the needs of gifted children who are also learning disabled or AD/HD, have Asperger's Syndrome or other behavioral or mental health disorders, and I try to work with schools to provide for the unusual combinations of strengths and weaknesses found in these children."
